NatureMaker® specializes in the design, engineering, custom fabrication and installation of one-of-a-kind highly naturalistic Steel Art Trees™. Steel, representing the intricate sub-structure of each arboreal sculpture; Art, for its level of detail, hand workmanship, and originality of design; Trees, NatureMaker’s passion for over three decades. Each tree is “87 percent botanically accurate.” The remaining percentage represents equal portions of artistic license, skill and the love of Nature that defines the Studio’s creations.
The art of engineering and the crafting of a Steel Art Tree begins with a thorough understanding of the client’s vision, his design, space, and budgetary parameters. At the outset, certified welders create the underlying steel structure to conform with approved design and engineering drawings. NatureMaker’s proprietary bark texture, applied by hand to steel, is hand-carved and hand-painted to naturalistically reflect the characteristic nuances of the tree specimen. Once completed, each tree is dismantled, shipped as a series of telescopically interlocking, finished components, and reassembled on site by NatureMaker artists. The final detailing imbues each sculpture with a seamless, organic quality.
Over the past three decades, the scope, scale and caliber of NatureMaker’s commissions – whether for luxury homes, prestigious hotels, resorts, casinos, retail, museums, libraries, lobbies/atriums, public art projects, theme parks and many more – has been a force in introducing Nature as ambience in cutting edge interiors.
More than just art
NatureMaker’s Steel Art Trees add value to an interior not only for their intrinsic artistry, their capacity to stir the imagination and engage the visitor; they also provide practical design and architectural solutions. Forty percent of NatureMaker trees are structurally engineered to act as decorative coverings for load-bearing columns, carefully camouflaged by artists with the knots and burls of an oak, cypress, banyan, birch, or numerous other varieties. Other practical applications include interactive/exhibit trees, multi-story monumental trees, walk-through and wall mounted trees.
NatureMaker, founded in 1983 by Gary Hanick and his partner – the renowned Bennett Abrams – each with the passion, foresight and technological acumen to create an entirely unique and contemporary visual art and design niche. Their imagination-based business grew to the state-of-the-art facility NatureMaker now occupies near San Diego, CA. But one thing has remained constant: each tree is as singular as one found in Nature itself.
